Mental Health Services at DOC

Each inmate entering the facility undergoes a comprehensive medical and mental health evaluation. As part of the Department of Corrections medical intake process, inmates are given a mental health screening to determine if the need for additional intervention exists. Based on the results of the screening, direct referral to a mental health clinician may follow for a more comprehensive mental health assessment. The outcome of this assessment will determine the course of mental health treatment which may include referral to a staff psychiatrist for further evaluation, referral for housing on the mental health unit based on acute care needs, regularly scheduled individual, or group counseling and/or prescriptions for required medication. The treatment course is detailed in the Individualized Treatment Plan and updated/tracked in the electronic medical record.

The DC Department of Mental Health provides on-site services along with practitioners from community service agencies who offer mental health intervention during incarceration—these organizations also coordinate after care services to ensure continuity of care. Specialized intervention is provided for inmates who have been sexually victimized, present with a history of sexually aggressive and/or are suicidal risks.
