DOC Breaks New Ground with Installation of Sophisticated Surveillance System

Wednesday, February 16, 2005

The DC Department of Corrections (DOC) announces the installation of a high tech, state-of-the-art camera surveillance system.

The camera surveillance system installation was completed this month, but has been partially activated since late last year. The system, consisting of 25 computers, 156 stationary cameras and 20 cameras with pan, tilt and zoom capability, is designed to serve as a deterrent to violence and provides 24-hour continuous monitoring of the entire facility. It enables the immediate identification, via closed-circuit television, of inmates involved in assaults or any other type of disorderly activity.  The cameras are installed in all housing units, recreation yards, loading docks and the visitation area at the jail.

“The activation of this surveillance system has already demonstrated that assaults and illegal activity in the jail will sharply decline,” stated DOC Director Odie Washington.  “This sophisticated system will go a long ways towards transforming the facility into a model jail in the nation’s capital making it a safer place for staff, inmates and visitors,” added Director Washington.

The surveillance system is an advanced, high-resolution software driven camera system that has a great deal of flexibility. The software activates recording when motion is detected in any part of a predetermined location.

The surveillance system is part of a $30 million Capital Improvement Program for the jail that addresses basic underlying infrastructure problems and improves the overall environment and security at the jail.
