NOTICE OF RESIDENT DEATH AT CENTRAL DETENTION FACILITY

On Monday, May 12, 2025, at approximately 2:30 PM, an inmate-on-inmate assault and stabbing involving two residents occurred at the DC Department of Corrections (DC DOC) Central Detention Facility. DOC staff and medical personnel administered immediate life-saving measures. DC Fire and EMS also responded and continued life-saving efforts; however, the injured resident, Carlos Shelley (29), of the District of Columbia, was pronounced dead at approximately 2:54 PM. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death. This incident is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department Homicide Branch and the DOC Office of Investigative Services.
