Lennard K. Johnson is a seasoned leader in public safety and correctional services, boasting a career that spans over 35 years. He presently holds the position of Deputy Director of Operations at the District of Columbia's Department of Corrections, where he oversees the day-to-day operations of the Central Detention Facility, Correctional Treatment Facility, and Central Cell Block.
Mr. Johnson started his public safety career in 1988 as a Correctional Officer with the Maryland Division of Correction. Throughout his tenure with Maryland, Mr. Johnson held several positions including Chief of Security, Director of the Intelligence Coordinating Unit, Commander of the Correctional Officer Recruitment Unit, Captain, Tactical Commander, Training Coordinator, and Risk Management Coordinator. His leadership of the Restrictive Housing Team was recognized when the team was awarded the Maryland Governor's Award for Excellence for their effective management of maximum-security inmates, which led to a significant reduction in assaults.
From 2014 to 2021, Mr. Johnson contributed his skills to the District of Columbia's Department of Corrections in the capacities of Warden and Deputy Warden. During that time, he graduated from the George Washington University Executive Leadership Program.
In 2022, he returned to Maryland to take on significant roles within the Division of Pretrial and Detention Services, including Warden and Acting Deputy Commissioner, and Acting Commissioner, overseeing four adult jails and the youth detention center.
Before his correctional career, Mr. Johnson served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg. Outside of work, he dedicates himself to his community as an Assistant Pastor and enjoys life as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
