DOC Incident Data - Deaths in Custody


Following a death in custody, the DC Department of Corrections adheres to the following notification process:

  • Within 24 hours, written notification of the death is provided to the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice, the Chairperson of the Council Committee with jurisdiction over the Department, and the Corrections Information Council.
  • No sooner than 24 hours after notifying the next of kin, provided the Department has their contact information, and no later than three days after the death, a written notification is posted on the Department’s website.
