Michelle K. Wilson joined the District of Columbia government in January 2020 as an Attorney Advisor at the DC Department of Corrections (DOC). After successfully assisting the agency in navigating the COVID-19 pandemic, Michelle was promoted to Interim Deputy Director of Administration at DOC in November 2021 and was appointed as Deputy Director of Administration in March 2022. In her capacity as the Deputy Director of Administration, Michelle, oversees the agency’s core administrative functions, including an agency budget of $185M, procurement, human resources, medical services, food services, acquisitions of supplies, risk management, information technology, strategic planning, facility maintenance, capital projects, and governmental affairs.
Prior to becoming a Deputy Director at DOC, Michelle spent almost 20 years practicing law. She was an Assistant Attorney General for the Maryland Office of the Attorney General. There she represented the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services and the Department of Labor. Before joining the Maryland Office of the Attorney General, Michelle was an Assistant State’s Attorney with the State’s Attorney’s Office for Baltimore City. She worked for the State’s Attorney’s Office for 10 years and left the office after spending four years prosecuting homicide cases.
Michelle has also sat on numerous boards, associations, and foundations. She is currently an active member of the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law Alumni Board and the Office of Victim Services and Justice Grants Domestic Violence Fatality Review Board. Michelle is a Past-President of the Alliance of Black Women Attorneys of Maryland, Inc. and a Past-President of the Monumental City Bar Association, the oldest African-American Bar Association in the State of Maryland. Michelle is a Past-President of her homeowner’s association, a Past-President of the Monumental City Bar Foundation, a Past-President of the Baltimore Bar Foundation and has assumed numerous leadership roles in the Maryland State Bar Association. Michelle is also a former Commissioner for the Maryland Real Estate Commission.
Michelle has also spent many years as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Baltimore School of Law, teaching first year law students legal writing and advocacy. In addition, Michelle has taught graduate and undergraduate business law and criminal law courses for Strayer University and Jarvis Christian University.
Michelle is a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Law and received her undergraduate degree from the University of Delaware. In her free time, Michelle enjoys traveling with her husband, family and friends, long walks with her dog Callie, and learning to swim and play tennis through the DC Department of Parks and Recreation programs.
