Correctional Officers Training

Phase 1: Pre-Service Training

  • Prior to the start of BCT, Recruits must complete Pre-Service Training. Which includes 16 hours of classroom instruction and 24 hours of online, self-directed training.

Phase 2: Foundations of Correctional Service

  • Recruits will embark on their correctional journey with an immersive orientation, learn the core values from the DOC's history, and grasp the ethical framework for their career.

  • They will learn about cultural diversity and equal employment principles, including disability rights and Language Access, setting the groundwork for respectful and effective communication.

  • They will gain crucial lifesaving skills through CPR and first aid training, and understand the legal environment they'll operate in.

Phase 2: Operational Skills and Safety

  • Recruits will gear up for the reality of the job with uniform fittings and weapon training, ensuring operational readiness and safety proficiency.

  • They will sharpen their skills in conflict resolution and communication, critical for diffusing tensions and maintaining control.

Phase 3: Advanced Training and Application

  • Recruits will master the use of advanced technology, such as body cameras, and develop investigative techniques that are essential in modern corrections.

  • Through On-the-Job Training at the Correctional Detention Facility (DC Jail), they will apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings, getting feedback to refine their skills.

Phase 4: Specialization and Integration

  • Recruits will focus on specialized training for managing emergencies, legal issues, and disturbance control, enhancing their capability to handle complex scenarios.

  • The training will culminate in rigorous practical exams and tours, ensuring that each Recruit is tested and ready for the multifaceted role of a correctional officer.

Phase 5: In-Service Training - Continuing Professional Development

  • All uniform, civilian, and contractor staff are required to complete In-Service training annually, ensuring they stay current on new policies, practices, and the evolving landscape of corrections.

  • They will revisit essential principles and procedures for refreshment, reinforcing the foundation of their daily responsibilities and upholding institutional standards.

  • Participants will explore best practices, promoting a culture of continuous learning, professional growth, and operational excellence within the department.
