Cell Door Replacement Project Completed

Institutional infrastructure improvements are critical to the Department’s ability to provide a safe, secure, and humane environment for those entrusted to our care and custody. Because the DC Jail is a 32 year old facility, the Department must continually facilitate evaluation of the structure’s sustainability and to implement the upgrades necessary to ensure effective functioning.

The Department, in collaboration with Real Estate Services, embarked upon a major renovation project involving the replacement and upgrade of the cell doors in all eighteen housing units at the DC Jail. This project, which highlights the Department’s ongoing efforts to enhance safety and security at the facility, began in October of 2010 and has been completed twelve months ahead of schedule. A total of 1,556 doors have been replaced.
