Correctional Officers' Training

Correctional Officers in the D.C. Department of Corrections undergo extensive training to prepare them for performance at optimal levels.  Recruits attend a seven week intensive training regiment which consists of over sixty (60) different courses of instruction.

Training Description
CPR/AED/First Aid Employees receive information and skills to serve as the first level of aid in an emergency medical situation. Topics include measures to keep someone alive, reduce pain, and minimize the potential for further injury or illness until professional medical help arrives.
Environmental/Sanitation Control Employees train in safety and sanitation of housing units, medical units, male and female R&D, culinary units, and all other applicable areas.
Fire Prevention Employees learn emergency procedures in the event of fire and gain knowledge of their legal obligations. Employees learn about the components necessary to ignite a fire, different types of fire extinguishers, and four by-products of fire.
Firearms Training This course provides officers and qualified employees with annual weapons qualification training. Employees learn to handle firearms safely and will develop greater shooting proficiency.
Health Precautions This course provides education and information sessions on infectious diseases, such as HIV/AIDS; tuberculosis (TB); hepatitis A, B, & C; MRSA and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
Introduction to Personal Computers This course provides a basic understanding of personal computers. This self-study course emphasizes basic use of the computer: starting up, shutting down, and using the mouse, keyboard, and Windows.
Jails and Community Corrections System (JACCS) This course provides an overview of the Department’s inmate management system (JACCS).  Employees learn login/logout procedures and the use of screens and execution of tasks relevant to specific job areas.
Legal Aspects of Corrections This course examines the constitutional rights of inmates and employees. Employees discuss the differences between rights and privileges, the types of lawsuits filed against the agency and/or staff, and defenses for certain types of lawsuits.
